Romeu Esteve

backend engineer · Barcelona (CET)

I like the unglamorous parts of backend work: APIs people can depend on, queues that don't drop jobs, systems you can reason about. I spent six months owning a research institute's simulation backend, built on Python, FastAPI, Celery, Redis and Docker. Now I'm finishing my degree and going deep on Go, distributed systems and databases. Learning in public, one flagship build at a time.

Experience

IREC (Institut de Recerca d'Energia de Catalunya)

Backend Engineering Intern Jan – Jul 2026
  • Built the simulation backend of the institute's Positive Energy Districts project in Python and FastAPI, owning the REST API from endpoint design to data models.
  • Orchestrated city-scale simulations. Cities came in as CityGML and landed in databases, where calculation modules computed energy, CO2, photovoltaic potential and greenhouse gases among others.
  • Ran long-running simulations asynchronously with Celery and Redis, containerized the stack with Docker, and integrated external simulation software (TRNSYS).
  • Main developer on the service for the full six months. Shipped features end to end and iterated directly on feedback from the research staff.

FIB (UPC), finishing my informatics degree in early 2027.
